Angila Urai Mertz, age 80 passed away May 7, 2021 in Killeen, Texas from
complications related to the muscle disease dermatomyositis. Mrs. Mertz was
born in Sa Kaeo, Thailand on January 1, 1941 to Korb and Phun Kaew Ka-Yan.
Angila met the love of her life, Carl Mertz, in Thailand in 1969 and arrived in the United States in December
1970. They were married in Fort Hood, Texas and shared a beautiful loving
marriage of 50 years in Harker Heights, Texas.
She was a dedicated and beloved wife, mother and grandmother. She was fond
of expressing her love through food, by cooking for her family and friends.
She always had a full rice cooker in the kitchen. On occasion she would
share exotic Thai food with her children's friends, sometimes to their
dismay but to her amusement. Carl would often joke about not eating Thai
food because he was not Thai, a family joke that never got old.
Angila was a homemaker. When Carl was deployed to Germany, she remained in
Harker Heights, took responsibility for the home and cared for their two
children until he returned. She also had a passion for bingo and made good
friends in that community.
She will be missed dearly and remembered every day.
Angila is survived by her husband, Carl Mertz; children Matthew Mertz and
Beverly Cline; family Roger Cline (son-in-law) and Laura Mertz
(daughter-in-law); grandchildren Ethan Cline, Ivan Cline and Madeline Mertz;
and brother Wat Kaew Ka-Yan.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am May 13 at Harper-Talasek Funeral
Home in Killeen with visitation beginning at 9:00am.
The family asks that donations be made to the Killeen Buddhist Thai Temple,
Wat Pah Samarkki, or plant a tree in memory of Angila Urai Mertz.
