Retired CWO3 Author D. Bess passed away peacefully at his home in Killeen, Texas, May 5, 2015. A viewing and visitation will be held at Harper Talasek's Funeral Home in Killeen on Sunday, May 10, 2015 from 6:00 till 8:00 PM. A full military ceremony with honors will be held at Central Texas State Veteran's Cemetery in Killeen, Texas at 10:00 AM, Monday, May 11, 2015. Author, the youngest child of 12, was born in Rush Springs, Oklahoma Indian Territory December 31, 1930. He joined the US Navy where he served on the aircraft carrier, Franklin D. Roosevelt for 11 years. After attending OTS he transferred to the US Army where he served 2 tours in Vietnam during his 11 years. He retired as CWO3 after 22 years of service. After a short stint of private business he started work for the City of Killeen serving as a Killeen Fire Department dispatcher. After retiring from the City of Killeen he was a member of numerous volunteer activities. Volunteering with KISD at Peebles Elementary School and Brookhaven Intermediate School as well as Bell County Human Services. He was a KCOP and received the Meritorious Service Award from the Killeen Police Department in 2004. He worked numerous rodeos and help set up the Killeen's Katrina and Rita evacuation center. He was Killeen's 'Volunteer of the Year' two times. He is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Maria, who passed 2 months ago on March 2nd. He is survived by his children Debra Jorgensen of Houston, Virginia Acevedo of Killeen, Sarah Ploug of Killeen and Sonny Bess of McGregor. He has seven grandchildren and five great granddaughters.
