Services for Betty Jo McBride Nonnemacher, 88, of Killeen, will be at 10 a.m. Jan. 8 at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Killeen Memorial Park.
Mrs. Nonnemacher died Dec. 29, 2017, at Park Place Manor in Belton. She was born Dec. 6, 1929, in Havana, Ark., to Ollis Everett McBride and Carrie Fay Turner McBride.
Mrs. Nonnemacher graduated from Arkansas State Teachers College in 1951. She began her teaching career in Caruthersville, Mo. After living and teaching in Arkansas, Kansas, Germany and Tennessee, she landed at East Ward Elementary in Killeen, where she taught for 25 years. She loved telling stories about her students and colleagues to the very end.
Mrs. Nonnemacher raised and educated three children mainly as a single mom. She was quite proud of the fact that all three of her children became teachers and that at one point all of them taught in Killeen at the same time. In addition, two of her granddaughters and her granddaughter-in-law are also teachers. This was her legacy.
Mrs. Nonnemacher was a proud member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church for nearly 50 years. There, she taught Sunday school, was active in Methodist Women, led Bible study and was known for helping with fellowship activities. One of her greatest honors was being chosen as Methodist Woman of the Year. In her later years, she believed her purpose was to share her faith with the residents at Park Place Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Nonnemacher was preceded in death by her only son, James Thomas McLean, and her parents.
