Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and
I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23:6
The heavenly hosts applauded in acknowledgment of the earthly assignment established for Cassandra Joy Williams Purnell.
The earthly inhabitants blushed upon the announcement affirming her birth on August 3, 1961. She was born one of three children entrusted to the parental stewardship of Willie and Robbie Williams Sr. in Gatesville, Texas. Much of her childhood years were spent growing up in McGregor, Texas until she and her family relocated to the city of Waco, Texas. She pursued her secondary education in the Waco Independent School District.
It would also be here that Joy would seal her eternal destiny by receiving Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She united with Second Missionary Baptist Christ at the tender age of ten and made a conscious choice to engage the path of service under His Lordship in devotion to the Youth Department.
Fearfully and wonderfully made, the contour of her physical build and athletic skills captured the attention of both coaches and team mates when she began playing basketball during her freshman year. She continued playing throughout her high school tenure as an invaluable member of the Richfield Ramblers Varsity Basketball Team. Her athletic skills and apparent scholastic potential were rewarded upon her graduation from Richfield High School in 1979 with a scholarship from the University of Texas at Austin. For the next four years she demonstrated the fruit of her athletic potential as a team member of the Lady Longhorns.
From commencement to the completion of her basketball career she was a starter. The fruit of her career as a Lady Longhorn Starter is as follows:
9642She currently ranks third in 114 games played
9642She currently ranks sixth with 156 shots blocked
9642She currently ranks tenth with 883 rebounds
9642She currently ranks twentyfifth with a record of 1162 points scored
As recent as November 7, 2014, her athletic abilities and accomplishments were
given due recognition and respect when she was inducted into the Waco Independent School District Sports Hall of Fame.
