Graveside services with full military honors for retired Sgt. 1st Class Charles E. Hughes, 69, of Temple, will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, with U.S. Army Chaplain Capt. Jorge Budez officiating.BRBRHughes died Nov. 2, 2008, in a Temple hospital. He was born May 27, 1939, in Pincap, Va., where he was also educated.BRBRHe served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, until his retirement at Fort Hood in 1978, as a sergeant first class.BRBRHis military awards include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal with five bronze loops, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one silver star, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with palm, and the Driver and Mechanic Badge.BRBRHughes worked for Military Rentals on Fort Hood. He graduated from Central Texas College with a degree in refrigeration and auto mechanics. He was a member of the VFW, DAV and AARP.BRBRSurvivors include his son, Thomas Hughes of San Antonio; his daughters, Kathy Hughes of Harker Heights and Carol Smith of Oviedo, Fla.; his sisters, Marie McDowell of Georgia, and Nancy Robertson and Peggy Lewis, both of Virginia; and three grandchildren.BRBRVisitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Killeen.
