CSM Ret Robert Earl Jones of Killeen reported for duty with God on October 27 after a short illness at Scott White Memorial Hospital in Temple. He was born in Powhatan, Alabama on November 13, 1939, and was the son of Alvis Jones and Willie May Espy Jones. He retired on July 31, 1985 from the Division Artillery, First Cavalry Division at Fort Hood after serving more than 29 years.
CSM Jones was a 1979 graduate of the 20 weeks Sergeant Major Academy Course. His decorations include the Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon Numeral 5, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Silver Service Star and 1 Bronze Service Star, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantryman Badge, Air Medal, Presidential Unit Citation with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm and 3 awards, Army Good Conduct Medal with Silver 3 Loops, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Achievement Medal, Legion of Merit, Expert Badge Rifle and Pistol, and the NCO Professional Development Ribbon Numeral 5.
He is survived by his wife, Julia B. Jones of Killeen, his sister Linda Jones Cassity of Flowery Branch, Georgia, kids: Richard and Maureen Jouett, Ralph and Judy Seales, grandkids: Rick Jouett, Ralph Seales III, Wolf and Melissa Jouett, Dan and Julie Pettit and great grandkids Mason, Katrina, Gabriel, Karsen, Corvin and Cody. He was preceded in death by his parents and 6 brothers and sisters: James Clyde Jones, Joe David Jones, Billy Jack Jones, Tommie Lee Jones, Catherine Sue Jones Butler, 2nd Lt. Johnny Mack Jones MIA and Patricia Ann Jones.
