Services for retired 1st Sgt. D.S. Freeman, 91, of Killeen, will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Marlboro Missionary Baptist Church, at 800 Rev. R.A. Abercrombie Drive in Killeen with Pastor Shaun Moton officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery. Mr. Freeman died April 18, 2013, at a Temple hospital. He was born Dec. 4, 1921, in Selma, Ark., where he was raised and educated. He was a member of Marlboro Heights Missionary Baptist Church and lived in Killeen since 1954. Mr. Freeman served 30 years in the U.S. Army, with duty in World War II, the Korean War and three tours in the Vietnam War, before retiring in 1972. His awards include two Bronze Star Medals, Meritorious Service Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, Good Conduct Medal with seven bronze loops, AsiaticPacific Theater Ribbon with bronze star, World War II Victory Ribbon, American Defense Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with bronze star, Philippine Independence Ribbon with bronze star, Korean Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal with oak leaf cluster Vietnam Service Medal and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with three bronze stars. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9191 and Disabled American Veterans Post 147 and a member of the Wyoming Lodge FAM No. 461 in Selma, Ark. He was also an inactive member of the Killeen Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Sheriff Association of Texas in Austin, National Association of Uniform Services, in Washington, D.C., and a member of the Democratic Party National Committee, Washington, D.C. Mr. Freeman graduated from the Modern Barber College of Austin in 1973. He also graduated from the Universal Hotel and Motel Management School of Miami, Fla., in 1974. He then worked as a barber at the Fort Hood NCO Club for 14 months. He then worked for the Texas Department of Corrections for seven years and the Department of Youth Council School for Boys in Gatesville for two years. Mr. Freeman was preceded in death by his parents, Melzer and Exie Freeman two sisters, Geardline Rancifer, Lula Mae Lucas and four brothers, Gilbert, Carbert, Dewitt and William Freeman. Survivors include his daughter, Gwendolyn Freeman of Columbus, Ga. sister, Darthy Barnes of Detroit, Mich. brother, James Freeman of Omaha, Neb. granddaughters, Lakida Freeman and Phoebe Thrasher, both of Columbus, Ga. greatgranddaughter, Journey Mabry of Columbus, Ga. nephew, Claude Mays of Calif. devoted friend, Dave Duren of Killeen and other relatives and friends.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at HarperTalasek Funeral Home in Killeen, which is in charge of arrangements.
