Services will full military honors for retired Sgt. Maj. Donald I. Cota, 68, of Killeen, will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, with an Army chaplain officiating.BRHe died Sept. 1, 2007, in a Fort Hood hospital.BRDonald was born Oct. 20, 1938, in Pyrites, N.Y. He joined the U.S. Army in 1955 and served two tours in Vietnam. His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal eighth award, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w7 service stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon w number 3, Overseas Service ribbon wnumber 3, Army Service Ribbon, and Expert Rifle Badge.BRHe retired in 1985 at Fort Hood. Donald then went to work for the civil service at the civilian pay office on Fort Hood, and retired there in 2004. He was an avid bowler and participant of Volksmarches while stationed in Germany. Donald was a member of the Retired Sergeants Major Association, VFW 9192 and American Bowling Congress.BRHe was preceded in death by his parents, Mahlon and Pearl Cota, five brothers and three sisters.BRSurvivors include his wife, Jane of Killeen; daughters, Terri Daniel and her husband, Jason Stockton of Killeen, Kelley McClay and her husband, Dewayne Webster of Horn Lake, Miss.; brothers, Harold Cota of New York, Dick Cota of Pyrites, N.Y., Arnold Cota of North Carolina, Lawrence Cota of New Mexico; sisters, Phyllis Glasgow of Syracuse, N.Y., Melody Cota of North Carolina; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.BRThe family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Killeen.BRMemorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
