Funeral services for Dwayne F. Simmons, 36, of Killeen will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Chaplain John Gabriel officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery.
Mr. Simmons died Aug. 29, 2010, in a Virginia hospital. He was born Nov. 22, 1973, in Moncks Corner, S.C.
Mr. Simmons graduated from Berkley High School, and went on to Claflin University where he graduated with a BS in Business Administration. He joined the U.S. Army in 1996, and served one tour in Iraq and one tour in Kuwait.
His awards include Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Superior Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and an Army Service Ribbon.
Mr. Simmons was an avid sports enthusiast and a true Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He was also a devoted son, father, husband and brother. He was loved by all he met and was a constant source of joy.
Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by his father, Alton Simmons a brother, Alton Simmons Jr. and a sister, Delores Simmons.
Survivors include his wife, Vannette of Killeen son, Ahmari Simmons of Killeen daughter, Elon Victoria Simmons of Killeen mother, Alethia Simmons of Moncks Corner, S.C. brother, Benjamin Hayward of Moncks Corner sisters, Loretha McClellan, Claudette Ladson, Alfreda Jones, Gwendolyn Ellington, all of Moncks Corner.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a rosary at 7 p.m. at HarperTalasek Funeral Home in Killeen, which is in charge of arrangements.
