She was born Nov. 25, 1904, to James and Eula Williams Hilliard near Caldwell. In her early childhood, her family moved to the SneedKasner ranch just west of Rosebud where her father worked as a sharecropper. She attended Rosebud schools, graduating in 1923. She then attended the University of Mary HardinBaylor in Belton, earning a degree in education and Latin. Some years later, she obtained a masters degree from Baylor University. In 1930 she married John Clark and together they were solid citizens of the community for many years.
She taught in rural areas before teaching in Rosebud schools. She was a classroom teacher for many years however, when WWII took the men out of the school, she became principal and, for two years, the football coach. After retiring, she returned when the school integrated to teach remedial reading.
Mrs. Clark, an avid reader, loved books. After her retirement, she read at least two books every week until she was in her 90s and her eyesight failed her.
She was an active member of the Methodist church. After years of her teaching the womens Sunday school class, the class named the class after her. The class decided to call it the Grace class grace being both a good Methodist word and also her name.
Mrs. Clark had a lifelong love of nature. She could often be found on the patio watering her plants or watching the birds around the feeder.
Mrs. Clark was preceded in death by her husband, John Clark of Rosebud three sisters, Florence Knutzen of Dallas, Lucile Dempsey of Dallas, Ann Kelly of Belton and two brothers, James Milton Hilliard of Waco and Kenneth Hilliard, who was killed in WWII.
