Services for SFC (Ret) Frank L. Murdock, 71, of Killeen will be at 1:00 pm Friday at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home Chapel Killeen with Dan Galanffy officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery.
Frank Lewis Murdock passed away Thursday, October 22 at the W. R. Courtney Veterans Home in Temple Texas after a long fight with illness and several amputations.
Frank was born June 26, 1944 in Wilkes-Barrie, Pennsylvania and grew up there until the age of 17 when he had the consent of his mother to join the Army.
Frank married Betty Lou Winfrey on June 23, 1963 in Fort Riley, Kansas. Two children were born to this union, Robbin Angela Murdock, born December 26, 1964, and William Wayne Murdock, born February 5, 1968.
He served 20 years in the Army, including one year in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive in 1967 and 1968, where he was injured. During this deployment, he received the Bronze Star as well as several awards. He was stationed in Germany twice for three years. During this time he and his family traveled extensively throughout Europe. He was also stationed in Hawaii for three years and numerous places in the United States.
Frank was transferred to Ft. Hood, Texas in September, 1980, and bought a home in Killeen during that year. Frank retired from the Army on January 31, 1982, at the rank of Sergeant First Class (E7). After his retirement, Frank worked as a corrections officer at the Bell County jail for six years.
In 1991 he and his wife opened a store named Laser Art and More in the Temple Mall. After three years they moved their business to the Killeen Mall. Frank and his wife closed their business in June, 2006 and retired.
During retirement, Frank enjoyed working out and riding his bicycle. He loved history and following politics. Frank and his wife raised their grandson, Steven Wayne Murdock, from the age of nine until he graduated from high school.
Frank is survived by his wife, Betty Lou; his children, Robbin and William, four grandchildren: Christopher Allen, Steven Wayne, Matthew Arron, Brittney Renee, and one great-grandson, Daniel; his brother, Leroy Murdock of Mountain Top, Pennsylvania, a step- brother, Jeff Mrochko, of Pennsylvania; and three nieces: Donna, Cathy, and Diane of Pennsylvania.
Visitation will be on Thursday October 29, 2015 from 6 and 8 pm at Harper-Talasek Funeral Killeen.
