Graveside services for George W. Brown, 85, of Killeen, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery with Father George Holston officiating. BRBRMr. Brown died Nov. 14, 2009. BRBRGeorge W. Brown was born June 30, 1924, in Cayce, S.C. His parents were Sallie Lorick Brown and the Rev. James Benjamin Brown. BRBRRev. Brown graduated from Allen University and was one of the few African-American Episcopal priests in the deep South at that time, serving as rector of Epiphany Episcopal Church in Spartanburg, S.C. George was drafted into the U.S. Army while a high school senior, and reported for duty after graduation in 1942. He served in the European Theater during World War II. BRBRDuring a 30-year Army career, he saw tours in Japan, Austria, Germany, Georgia, New Jersey, Washington, Virginia and Texas, as well as serving in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired with the rank of sergeant major in 1973. He was a member of American Legion Post 223, and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9191, the Disabled American Veterans, and the Armed Forces E-9 Association. BRBRHe is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara Stone Brown of Killeen; daughter, Valeri Brown Bogucki and her husband, Paul, of Austin; grandchildren Woodrow and Harriet Bogucki, of Austin; brother, Alfred Brown of Philadelphia, Pa.; sister, Cornell Manyfield of Spartanburg, S.C.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sallie and the Rev. James Brown; brothers James, Millard and Elliott Brown; and sister Virginia Brown. Harper-Talasek Funeral home in Killeen is in charge of arrangements. BR
