Iris (Zane) was born on July 29, 1922 in Moonshine Hill, Texas to Percy W. and Lena Rivers Goodwin Smale. She grew up in Oakalla, Texas on the family farm and completed school at the Oakalla Schoolhouse in 1940. At age 17, while attending a barn dance, a young man named Edwin Glendell Hilliard persuaded her to dance with him, and the rest is history! They married on September 29, 1940, settled in Killeen, Texas, and raised two sons, Charles Edwin and Danny Allen Hilliard.

She worked at the Camp Hood Commissary at Fort Hood from 1944-1945 while Glendell was enlisted in the United States Army. Following his discharge, she worked at Cleo Bay Modern Foods as a cashier. During 1962 she began her career at Sears Roebuck where she worked as the Switchboard Operator until she retired in 1984.

A day after her retirement, she and Glendell packed up their new pop up travel trailer and headed to Alaska! They traveled the country with friends and family and eventually traded in that little pop up for something bigger and better! She loved sightseeing, and some of her favorite destinations were Alaska, Colorado, Branson, Arkansas, and Yellowstone. In addition to travel, she enjoyed growing beautiful Zina's and Salvia, gathering pecans, spending time with family, and being involved in church activities. She was a member of First Baptist Church for 54 years.

Iris (Zane) is preceded in death by her parents; husband Glendell; son Danny; brother John (Russell); sisters Ica (Jean), and Vonna (Zoe); and infant sister Madge. She is survived by her son Charles Hilliard, of Point Blank, Texas; granddaughter Laurie Hilliard, of Marlin, Texas; granddaughter Michelle (Richard) Steptoe, of New Waverly, Texas; granddaughter Cristy (Bennie) Mynar, of Abbott, Texas; great-grandchildren Cassidy Bullard, Kendall Bullard, Brent Mynar, and Kenna Mynar; and numerous nieces and nephews.
