Funeral services for Jerry D. Henderson, 68, of Killeen will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Killeen with the Rev. John Abbey and Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Interment will follow at McDowell Cemetery in Belton.
Mr. Henderson died July 18, 2010, at a Temple hospital. He was born Nov. 19, 1941, in Mound.
Mr. Hendersons career in the restaurant business started at the early age of 15 as a dishwasher for Chesss Drivein in Killeen. Jerry married Vivian Owen in 1961. It was not long before he had worked his way to manager, he soon became a partner in ownership wtih Chester Burson and brother Denver.
He later opened the first restaurant on restaurant row, the Hallmark Restaurant, and then Chesss restaurant in Copperas Cove and the Hallmark Restaurant in the Belton area.Jerry and Denver were two special brothers who loved each other and relied on each other through good times and bad. That is the reason they were so successful in the restaurant busniess. This led the way to Hendersons Family Restaurant on 10th Street and PaPas Cafe in Harker Heights.
Jerry was always thinking of others before himself. He opened Hendersons every Christmas Day to provide a meal to the homeless in Killeen.
His giving spirit was present throughout his life in the many fundraisers and community activities he was a party to.
His latest endeavor was to partner with Doyle Whitehead and organize the fundraiser for Tom Ambrose, who was seriously injured in a bulldozer accident.
Jerry was a member of the Bethel Church in Killeen, the Masonic Lodge 1125, a 32nd Degree Texas Scottish Rite Mason, and the Karem Shrine of Waco.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Henderson, of Killeen sons, Jerry Jerry Edward Henderson and wife Terry, and Del Dean Henderson and wife Renee, all of Killeen a sister, Evia Mae Gilliland, of McGregor nine grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.
The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. today at HarperTalasek Funeral Home in Killeen, which is in charge of arrangements.
