Joe S. Cox

September 19, 1944 — August 17, 2025

Brownwood

Joe S. Cox, age 80 of Brownwood, Texas, passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2025. Services will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at First United Methodist Church of Nolanville with a visitation starting at 9 am, and funeral immediately following at 10 am. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Nolanville.

Joe was born on September 19, 1944, to the late Homer Sanderford and Annie Lou Ratliff Cox in Brownwood, Texas. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from North Texas State University and went on to enjoy a long career as both a banker and a car dealer.

An accomplished athlete, Joe excelled in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He attended North Texas State University on a track scholarship, and his competitive spirit stayed with him throughout his life. Known affectionately as “The Dealmaker,” Joe had a knack for making deals from the time he was in junior high, a talent that became part of his legacy.

Growing up as a preacher’s kid, Joe often got into the kinds of mischievous adventures that come with that title. His sense of humor and youthful energy stayed with him well into adulthood. Even after his daughters graduated, Joe continued to take part in summer workouts and pre-season football conditioning, just for the joy of it.

Faith was always an important part of Joe’s life. He was an active member of the Methodist church wherever he lived and took pride in raising his daughters in the church.

Of all his accomplishments, Joe’s greatest joy was his family, especially his nine grandchildren and great grandchildren, who brought endless happiness to his life. He was known for his willingness to lend a helping hand and was often among the first to show up when someone needed assistance.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; son, Cody Joe Cox; brother, Carl Randall Cox; sisters, Karen Melinda Cox, and Carroll Ratliff Cox; grandson, James Carey, and son-in-law, Chris Anquiano.

Survivors include his daughters, Deb Anquiano, Julie Thompson and husband Tim, and Mendy Carey and husband Joel; brothers, Adrian Owensby Cox, Kenneth “Paul” Cox, and Jerry Dean Cox; grandchildren, Colin (Rachel) Chandler, Kalyn (Edward) Chandler Lerma, Brittany (Sam) Aviles, John Michael (Faith) Chandler, Luke (Morgan) Carey, Matt (Claire) Carey, Cole (Saki) Carey, Jack Carey, and Grace Carey; and great grandchildren, Sebastian, Jorge, Ryan, Bella, Lilly, Logan, Leonel, Liliana, Catalina, Talon, and Margot.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church of Nolanville. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Brownwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and its staff for the exceptional care and kindness shown to Joe.
