Funeral services for Joe Doyle Jacobs, 68, of Killeen will be at noon Tuesday at Marlboro Heights Missionary Baptist Church in Killeen with Dr. Shaun L. Moton officiating. Burial will follow at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
Joe Doyle Jacobs was born to the parentage of J. B. and Modessa Smith Jacobs on December 30, 1941 in Bogalusa, Louisiana. Here he matriculated through the public school system, and was awarded his High school diploma from Central Memorial High School in 1959.
As a young man of unique principles and stern conviction, he sought and gained employment in the food service industry despite having to hurdle the challenges of segregation. While surveying the prospect of his salvific encounter with Jesus Christ at the First Church of God in Christ in Bogalusa, Louisiana destiny directed his steps to meet the woman who would become his wife. On March 21, 1960 he was united in holy matrimony to the inimitable and illustrious Mavis Gene Martin. This union bore the fruit of three fearfully and wonderfully made children.
In 1962 Joe enlisted in the United States Army. His military occupational specialty was twofold. He served as an Infantryman for 17 years and 11 months and as a Unit Supply Specialist for 5 years and 11 months for a combined total of 23 years and 10 months of honorable service rendered to his country. During his military tenure he was honored with many awards and decorations to include: The National Defense Ribbon Overseas Service Ribbon The Army Commendation Medal The Expert Infantry Badge The Good Conduct Medal Clasp Bronze 5 Loops The Sharp Shooter Badge Rifle The Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal The Soldiers Medal, and The Army Achievement Medal.
After his retirement from the United States Army, he embarked upon a second career at The Texas Department of Corrections. Here he invested 16 years of service before becoming disabled and retired for a second time in 1998.
The most fruitful and fulfilling decision made in his life was when he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior, and was baptized after uniting with the Marlboro Heights Missionary Baptist Church in 1990. His occasional attendance and participation in worship over the years served to affirm the reality of his reverence and relationship to the Lord. Throughout the progressive decline of his health, he verbally acknowledged and affirmed his appreciation for the providential plan of God for his life.
