Funeral services for Kenneth Roland Wade, of Llano Formerly of Killeen will be held Wednesday, January 27, Noon at the HarperTalasek Funeral Home Chapel located at 506 N. 38th Street in Killeen with burial immediately following at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 11463 HWY. 195, Killeen, Texas.
Kenneth passed away on January 23, 2010, after a lenghty illness. Ken was born May 24, 1931, to the parents of J.T and Ernestine Davis Wade in Bell County, Texas.
Ken was an accomplished athlete while attending Rodgers High School, and set many records that still stand today. After graduation he joined the Navy and and continued to play baseball. Once he finished his military service, he started his minor league baseball career as an accomplished pitcher. He was on his way to a major league career when his playing days were cut short due to an injury to his pitching arm, but he remained involved in the sports field and worked for the parks and recreation departments in Temple and Killeen for more than 30 years.
He remained actively involved in sports throughout his life, participating in coaching and refereeing sports such as baseball, basketball, football, and golf. More importantly, he made a positive impact on a generation of young people by encouraging them to remain active throughtout their lives by playing sports.
Ken was a leader in the American Softball Association, Texas Teenage Amateur Baseball, and the TempleCentex Chapter of the Texas Association of Athletic Officials. His hobbies also included golf, fishing and hunting.
Ken was proceeded in death by his siblings Dorothy Alexander, June Thompson, and David Wade and stepchildren Robert Cantrell and Kim Cantrell.
Ken is survived by his wife, Winnie Wade sons, Greg Wade and Doug Wade and his wife Donna daughters, Jan Huffcut and her husband Jim and Ann Morris and her husband Terry 11 grandchildren and 3 greatgrandchildren.
Pallbearers are Ryan Wade, Joel Daniels, Shawn Cockerham, Casey Landers, Terry Mikulena, Ted Franklin and Dave Saucier. Honorary Pallbearers are Coach Cottel, Ronnie Chapman, Kermit Cosper, Jimmy Sutton, Jackie Justins, Wayne Gossett, Gary Gatliff, Billy Ratliff, all of Kens golfing, fishing, baseball, and coffee buddies, and his TTAB and ASA friends and colleagues.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 26, from 57 p.m. at HarperTalasek Funeral Home in Killeen.
