Funeral services for Leonard David Mays, 76, of Harker Heights, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home Chapel in Killeen with the Rev. Ron Watlington officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
Leonard David Mays was born on July 22, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois from the union of Leonard SR. and Ruth Mays.
Leonard accepted Christ at an early age. He was a 40 year resident of Killeen and Harker Heights. He served in the United States Army for 27 years before retiring in 1983. His awards include: Army Commendation Medal (w/1 OLC); Good Conduct Medal (w/Silver, 1 loop); National Defense Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon (Numeral 4); Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea); Vietnam Service Medal (w/3 Bronze Service Stars) ; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Combat Medical Badge and NCO Professional Development Ribbon (Numeral 1).
After retiring from the military, he worked for the United States Postal Service for 20 years until retirement.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, David Leonard Mays.
He leaves to cherish his life a devoted wife, Dortha Mays, who was always by his side; daughters: Rosalyn Frazier, Jacqueline Thomas, Hope Hopkins, Tonya and Virginia Mays; three devoted sons: Zethery and Zachary Penrice and Ronald Mays: a host of grandchildren; one uncle and aunt: Irvine and June Nicholson; and one cousin, Sidney Mays and his wife, Betty.
Visitation is from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Killeen, which is in charge of arrangements.
