Mrs. Lucy Book was born on September 12, 1944 in Manila, Philippines. She was the daughter of Manuel Gutierrez and Marissa Luna Gutierrez who ran a sari-sari store (similar to a convenience store) near Manila. She was the oldest of 12 children. Lucy never had the opportunity for a formal education; however, she taught herself to read and write. Lucy helped care for her siblings while her parents ran the store. In addition to caring for her siblings, Lucy helped her parents clean the store and prepare for the daily operations. Life was not easy in her early years and this helped shape Lucy into a bold and selfless independent woman.
In 1975, Lucy immigrated to the United States, eventually settling in Killeen, Texas with her husband of 36 years, Robert Book. Lucy traveled extensively in the United States, Asia, and Europe. Lucy raised a daughter, Josephine, and a son, Arthur. Lucy enjoyed gardening, cooking, and planting and growing fruit trees. Lucy had been involved with the Filipino-American Association of Central Texas.
Lucy is survived by her husband, Robert Book, of Killeen; her daughter, Josephine Martin of Roswell, New Mexico; and a son, Arthur Book, of Killeen. Lucy had one grandson, Joseph Curran of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She had two great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
Lucy had many wonderful characteristics and attributes but the legacy she leaves behind for her children and others who have known her is to be self-determined, resilient, and compassionate to others. She will be missed but will live in the hearts of those close to her.
