Mark Anthony Kurtz

Mark Anthony Kurtz, 65, of Kempner, Texas, passed away leaving behind a legacy of dedication, service, and steadfast love for his family and community.

Born on March 9, 1960, in Germany, Mark was adopted by Maria and Edwin Kurtz, and raised in a way that shaped his unwavering work ethic and deep loyalty to those he loved. He was a graduate of Killeen High School and went on to complete Fire Academy training and Paramedic School. Mark dedicated his career to serving others as a firefighter and paramedic from 1981 to 2018, including many years with Metroplex.

Mark lived a life filled with purpose and simple joys. He loved fishing, hunting, camping, western movies, and video games. He enjoyed woodworking—especially using pallets—and was passionate about trains. He was big on travel and believed in making memories wherever life took him. Mark was known for his patience, his easygoing nature, and his willingness to help anyone in need. He was a hard worker who always made sure his family was cared for. As a mentor, he took pride in teaching others—whether it was cooking, navigating daily challenges, or teaching his children how to drive a stick shift. His knowledge seemed endless, and he had a gift for fixing even the smallest things. To many, he was a fountain of wisdom; everyone who crossed his path walked away with something meaningful, whether a lesson, a story, or a moment of encouragement.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maria and Edwin Kurtz, and his spouse, Nannette Kurtz.

Mark is survived by his sons, Chandler Kurtz and Dustin Kurtz; his daughters, Chelsea Myers (husband Rob) and Mackienzie; his brothers, Ted Haufennier (wife Darlene) and Roland Haufennier (wife Michelle); his sister, Monika Pakcyk; and his grandchildren, Mallory and Logan Myers. He is also remembered by his extended family, colleagues, and countless friends whose lives he touched.

Memorials and flowers may be sent to his children at the addresses provided, where they will arrange for placement at Mark’s burial site. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the Killeen Fire Union, Killeen Fire Department, Metroplex colleagues, and their church family for the unwavering support shown not only throughout Mark’s life but especially during this difficult time. Their kindness has been a source of strength and comfort.
