Mary Elizabeth Sprott, 87, of Harker Heights, passed away on Saturday, January 9 surrounded by family in song.
Mrs. Sprott Libby was born on August 2, 1922 to Rod and Lillian Hickman in Starksville, Mississippi. The Hickmans lived most of Libbys growingup life in Columbus, Mississippi. She graduated from Stephen D. Lee High School in 1940, and then left for David Lipscomb College. She only attended one year there, and then returned home to attend Mississippi State Womens College. This proved to be a fortuitous decision because in January of 1942, she met Nathan H. Sprott, who was stationed at the Mississippi Army Air Base. They grew to know each other as he faithfully asked to be given leave from the base to attend church services with the congregation where Libby and her family were members. Nathan N.H. and Libby were married in the summer of 1943, and Libby stayed close to her home with their newborn son, William Nathan Bill, born in 1944 as N.H. was still active in the military. After the war ended and N.H.s discharge they moved to his hometown of Killeen, Texas. There they resided and had their second son, David Henry, in 1948 and their daughter, Janet Elizabeth Jan, in 1953. Libby completed her college degree in Home Economics at Mary Hardin Baylor College in 1957.
She began teaching shortly thereafter, in 1958 in the Killeen School District and did so for 25 years. She taught at Killeen High School, Rancier Junior High, and was the head of the Home Economics department at Ellison High School. She practiced her art well as her comforting home was always a place where people wanted to gather, and she was well known for her mastery of cooking and sewing. The Sprotts were faithful members of the Killeen Church of Christ, and Libby dedicated countless hours of service to this congregation and its work. She is remembered for her kind, gentle spirit and those around her found themselves in tune with the contentment she found in life.
She is preceded in death by her husband, N.H. Sprott, Jr., her son, Bill, her daughter, Jan, her parents, Rod and Lillian Hickman, and her brother, Rod Hickman.
She is survived by her son, David H. Sprott of Belton, her brother, Bob Hickman of Columbus, Mississippi, seven grandchildren, Joelle Yates of Houston, Jeremy Sprott of Houston, David Allen Sprott of Belton, Jeffery Sprott of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Annie Drachenberg of Houston, Reagan Morgan of Dallas, and Meredith Morgan of Ft.Worth, along with three greatgrandchildren.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the HarperTalasek Funeral Home Chapel in Killeen.
