Melvin Moody Taylor

December 26, 1938 — June 14, 2025

McGregor

Melvin Taylor, 86, of McGregor TX passed into eternity with Jesus at Royal Manor in Hewitt TX. Visitation will be at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Killeen TX on Friday, June 20, from 9:00-10:00 am for family and then 10-10:30 am for all others who wish to pay their respects at that time. Services will follow at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Killeen TX on Friday, June 20, at 10:30 am. Graveside service will then be at Cedar Knob Cemetery in Salado TX.

Melvin was born in Bell County, Temple TX December 26, 1938, to Lallie Maye (Cabiness) Taylor and William Kindred Taylor. He married Helen Phelps in 1958. Melvin later married Joy Ann Shuffield in May of 1976 and shared 44 years together until her passing. He had many occupations throughout his life including B-52 crew member and mechanic in the United States Air Force and twenty years as an employee with Mrs. Baird’s Bread.

His greatest work was that of being a caring, hardworking family man and friend to all who were blessed to know him. Melvin enjoyed playing games with his family, hosting large Easter and Christmas family gatherings, and telling others about his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Melvin enjoyed games so much that he often made card holders and game boards in his free time for the family to enjoy. Melvin was an avid reader of science fiction and westerns and could be found often lying on his belly with pillows tucked under his chest relaxing with one of his many books. He was a man of faith as the son of a preacher.

Melvin rarely discussed his faith, but when he did he often surprised us with his knowledge of scripture no doubt memorized as a boy under his father’s tutelage. He was baptized in faith in Jesus Christ at The Well Church of Moody TX in 2018.

Melvin Moody Taylor is preceded in death by his father William Kindred Taylor, mother Lallie Maye (Cabiness) Taylor Stapleton, wives Helen Phelps (Taylor) and Joy Ann Shuffield (Taylor), and grandchildren Elisa Taylor and Edwin Jackson.

He is survived by children Jason Taylor of McGregor, Chris Taylor of McGregor, Melissa Mitchell of Waxahachie, Joyce Hill of Cameron, Tressa Mahoney of Waxahachie, Cheryl Taylor of Longview, William Taylor of Royse City, Danny Taylor of McGregor, Robert Taylor of Bryson City, NC, as well as dozens of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Christian Taylor, Steven Taylor, Zachery Flower, Nicholas Smith, Benjamin Harden, and Jase Taylor.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Royal Manor and Providence Hospice for their loving care of Melvin Moody Taylor.
