The birth of Michael Lemorn Pointer Sr. was an amazing affirmation of the Glory of God. He was born to the parental stewardship of Pedro Pointer Sr. and Estelle Pointer on October 19, 1959, in Tuskegee, Alabama.
He pursued his formal education in the public schools of Tuskeegee and graduated from Tuskegee Institute High School in 1978. At the tender age of twelve, he sealed his eternal destiny by accepting Jesus Christ as his personal Savior.
As a young man on a quest to assure a responsible lifestyle by earning a respectable livelihood, he enlisted in the United States Army to serve his country. His Military Occupational Skill upon initial entry to active duty was a 76C Equipment Records and Parts Specialist. Later his Military Occupational Skill would be changed to a 92Y Unit Supply Specialist.
The fruit of his military career was laced with many opportunities and experiences contributing to his growth and development as a seasoned soldier.
His awards and decorations were the fruit of the seeds he invested in the discipline of education, training, leadership, and devoted service. Among the innumerable awards and decorations he received include but are not limited to the following: the Army Service Medal, the Non-Commissioned Officer's Professional Development Ribbon Numeral 3, the Southwest Asia Service Medal with 3 Bronz Service Stars, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal (seventh award), the Army Achievement Medal (ninth award), the Army Commendation Medal (3rd award), and the Meritorious Service Medal (3rd award). After serving his country faithfully for twenty-one and a half years, he honorably retired on July 31, 2000 at Fort Hood, Texas.
The conclusion of his military career resulted in the commencement of yet another career in the Killeen Independent School District. Between the years of 2000-2019 Michael would serve KISD as a Property Management Supervisor, the Coordinator for Risk Management & Employee Benefits, and Risk Management Certification.
Exceeding the fruit of his labor while engaging such a rewarding military career would be the greatest embrace of his most significant earthly blessing. That blessing in the words of Proverbs 18:22 which says, "He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord."
Michael found his good thing in the precious personality of the late Sonya Le (Bolden)Pointer. The two were united in holy matrimony on August 30, 1994. Together they treasured the blessings of parenting four beautiful children.
Resolved to live under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, Michael united with the Marlboro Heights Missionary Baptist Church on August 4, 1996. The strength of his witness as a worshipper was complimented by his service to the Lord through the church's Bus Ministry.
His decision to serve the Bus Ministry was inspired by his devotion to helping people in more ways than transportation required. He had a particular passion for serving the needs of elders who had a desire to come to church. Those impaired by physical injuries or conditions requiring the use of wheelchairs or walkers found an enormous heart of compassion in Michael Pointer. His service to elders expanded beyond the parameters of assuring their ability to attend worship on weekends.
Michael would often arrange to take time off his job to assure that some of the elders with doctor's appointments, dental appointments, and sometimes, even hair appointments would not have to concern themselves with how they were going to get where they were going.
He was a person who took ownership of relational stewardship with each person he worked with or among in the Bus Ministry. Amid many transitions in the ministry over the years, Michael demonstrated his service could not be halted by any differences with policies, procedures, people, or even the pastor. His service to the Bus Ministry demonstrated the highest caliber in character, conduct, and commitment to the Glory of God.
As such, it would come as no surprise that he served the Lord through the Bus Ministry of Marlboro until his physical limitations prohibited the discharge of his devoted duties. To be certain, Michael Pointer epitomized what 1 Corinthians 4:2 refers to as a man who proved to be "A Faithful Steward."
Nearing the closing months of his earthly tenure, Michael would affirm the secret to maintaining the strength of his peaceful resolve amid so many challenging days. He would affirm the Sufficiency of the Grace of God to be his Strength in weakness.
It would be the strength of this resolve that would enable him to peacefully transition from the shores of this earthly realm on the early evening of February 23, 2019. His transition was as graceful as he knew God to be Faithful.
Among those preceding his transition from earth to Glory are his late Wife: Sonya Le (Bolden) Pointer; Parents: Estelle Clark Pointer and Pedro Pointer Sr.
Among those who love and will live to cherish his memory until the resurrection and union at the return of our Lord are four children: Michael Pointer Jr. (Killeen, TX) Kenny Pointer (St. Paul, MN.) Déjé and Haleigh Pointer, (Killeen, TX); Five Siblings: Estella Washington (Harold) Tuskegee, Alabama, Eldred Pointer (Troy, Alabama) Pedro Pointer Jr. (Tuskegee, Alabama) Sharon Rudolph (Tuskegee, Alabama) Ke'van Pointer (Bianca) Heidelberg Germany; Four Grandchildren: Kennedy and Keegan Ekwochi (Saint Paul, MN) Tremain Corson and Azalea Pointer (Killeen, TX) and a host of extended family members, significant loved ones and friends throughout the fellowship of the Body of Christ.
He fought a good fight, finished his course, and kept the Faith. A fruitful and fulfilling life on earth has now been exchanged for a more glorious life in eternity! His special message to his family was prepared in advance, anticipating the celebration of his life. It was documented in his celebration profile, and is provided for us to reflect upon as follows:
"I want y'all to know that it's not about my time. It's about your time. I want you to remember me as I honestly am, and be able to laugh at the stories I left behind. Don't worry about me. God's Plan and Grace are always sufficient. I'm going Home to Glory."
