Mollie Henderson Duncan passed away on August 30, 2014 in Winter Park, Florida at the age of 102 years. She was born on March 7, 1912.
Mollies parents were Thomas Charles Henderson and Willow Virginia Cook, descendants of the original settlers of Bell County, Texas. Mollie was born and grew up in the Okay community, which is where the KilleenFort Hood Regional Airport is now located. She was the youngest of three daughters. With her sisters Bernice Priest and Hollis Carroll, she worked on the family ranch. Mollie particularly enjoyed riding her horse, Dick, and working cattle. She participated in two cattle drives as a young woman. Mollie graduated from Killeen High School in 1929 and in 1936 she graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College now Texas State University. In 1936, Mollie married Barney James Duncan, who preceded her in death in 1996. Mollie was an elementary school teacher for 33 years. During World War II, she worked in a shipyard in Orange, Texas installing electrical wiring for ship intercoms. Later, Mollie taught in Fort Hood schools until 1972.
After retirement, Mollie taught Sunday school in her home church, the First Baptist Church of Killeen, Texas. Through the AARP and IRS, she volunteered as a tax aide for 12 years, helping elderly people prepare their tax returns. She also helped organize the Killeen chapter of the AARP. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was previously a member of the Killeen chapter of the American Business Womens Association and the Killeen Garden Club. Mollie loved having fun. She organized garden club trips and parties, played jokes, and dressed up for Halloween, winning several contests with her homemade costumes.
In 1998 she moved from The Meridian in Temple, Texas to Winter Park, Florida. Her later years had been spent enjoying her loving family and life at the Mayflower Retirement Community. She is survived by her daughter Charlotte Nielson and husband Dave grandchildren Kristi Kamada Alan and Jeff Nielson Melanie great grandchildren Jay and Max Nielson and Alex Kamada nephews Bobby Carroll and Mark Priest, and niece Nita Palmer. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church of Winter Park 125 N. Interlachen Avenue, Winter Park, FL 32789 earmarked for Mentoring Academic Progress or MAP a tutoring program for low income children or a charity of choice.
