Longtime Killeen resident, Opal M. Smith, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 24, at the age of 91. Although she spent most of her life in Killeen, where she was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, she lived the last 10 years close to her son Michael, and his family, in Austin. Opal was born on July 2, 1916, in Killeen. She was married to Boyce B. Smith for just under 50 years, until his passing in 1987.
The joy of her life was spending time with her family, in particular her two wonderful grandsons Brian 22 and Scott 17. Moving to Austin gave her the opportunity to be with them more often, although with the onslaught of Alzheimers in recent years, the visits became a little more difficult for everyone. No matter, you could still see the love and joy in her eyes whenever family was nearby.
Her warmth and hospitality will be remembered by anyone who was at her house, whether on a planned visit or just dropping by. We will always remember those family gatherings for Christmas, along with birthday cakes and celebrations.
Opal is survived by her son, Michael, and his wife Loretta, along with grandsons Brian and Scott, sister Jewel Wells of Killeen, sister in law Marjorie Jean of Killeen, and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be noon until 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday May 28th followed by funeral services at 2:30 pm, in the chapel at Harper Talasek Funeral Home in Killeen. Burial to follow in Killeen Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that you make a financial contribution to the building fund at First Baptist Church in Killeen; 802 N 2nd St, Killeen, TX, 76541
