Funeral services for retired 1st. Sgt. Paul T. Lyczak, 75, of Killeen, will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Killeen with Chaplain Col. McCabe officiating. Interment will follow at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery with full military honors. Honorary pall bears will be retired Lt. Col. David D. Paulsen, retired Sgt. Maj. Linsley Moore, 1st. Sgt. Lewis McDonald, Staff Sgt. Hector Ruelas, Staff Sgt. Jay Hocker, Capt. Silias Jones, Capt. Alex Garcia, all active or retired members of the Army. Mr. Lyczak died Sept. 20, 2009, in a Temple hospital. Mr. Lyczak was born in Martins Ferry, Ohio, in 1934. BRBRHe was the youngest of five sisters and one brother. He lived in Flushing, Ohio, until 1941 and then moved to Detroit, Mich, where he attended St. Mary's of Orchard Lake and graduated from St. Andrew's High School. In l953, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. After completing AIT training at Fort Knox, Ky., he started his career with the 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in Geinhausen, Germany. His numerous assignments included: ROTC instructor with the Dallas School System and two tours in Vietnam as an adviser in l968 and again in l971. He had the great honor of forming his OWN Company when he was assigned to Fort Hood, which was widely written up in the Dallas papers. He was very proud to be the 1st Sgt. of C Company, 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, of the GREAT 1st Division. He did this under the guidance of a man he truly respected, Capt. Alex Garcia. With the hard work and the great respect he had for the military, among his many awards and decorations, he received the Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal with five loops, Army Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Expert Infantryman Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star and Palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and Bronze Star with V device and two Oak Leaf Clusters. He married his wife, Marlene, at St. Bridgid's Catholic Church in September 1961 and drove in his pride and joy, a l956 white Caddie convertible to his assignment at Fort Carson, Colo. He was the proud father of three daughters, Helena Prince of Berlin, Germany, Michelle Lyczak and her husband, Frank Lemoine, and Kathrine, deceased. After retirement, he moved to Dallas where he worked for the Knights of Columbus Ins. Co. He was very active with the Knights and was a lifetime fourth degree member of the Father Ryan Assembly in Dallas. He also passed Grand Knight of Council 6402. In 2005, he moved back to the Fort Hood area. BRBRHe leaves behind many nieces, nephews and a multitude of friends all over the country. Memorial donations can be made to a military organization of your choice, or the American Cancer Society. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Killeen, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. BR
