Funeral services for Paula B. Sanchez, 90, will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home, 506 N. 38th St., Killeen, TX 76543. Interment will follow at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 11463 State Highway 195, Killeen, TX 76542. Family and friends are invited to Paula's home after the interment.
Mrs. Sanchez died March 25, 2017, peacefully surrounded by her eight children and extended family. She was born Feb. 24, 1927, in Cidra, Puerto Rico, to Pedro Benitez and Vicenta Cruz.
On July 6, 1946, in Caguas, Puerto Rico, Paula married Eloy Sanchez. Eloy had joined the U.S. Army prior to marriage and soon they were stationed across the world as they raised their family. When Paula left Puerto Rico, she learned how to read and speak English by watching television shows, a prelude that highlighted her quality of strong determination demonstrated throughout her life, but her first language was always Spanish. Paula was a woman who epitomized what it means to love family, especially her children and grandchildren. She is remembered as a strong, caring, God-fearing woman who always put her husband and children before herself. In addition to being a homemaker, Paula was a self-taught upholsterer, a talent she passed on to her grandchildren, and was often seen cooking large pots of food for her family. Paula's legacy of cooking continues as she passed her passion and love for cooking to her children and grandchildren.
The family gives special thanks to Jose "Manuel" Gomez, Cathy Eldridge, Jutta Styles, Maria Ortiz and Denise Galloway (Kindred Hospital) for their special loving care of our beloved Paula.
Mrs. Sanchez was preceded in death by her husband, Eloy R. Sanchez; her parents; and her numerous siblings.
Survivors include her children, Angel Luis Sanchez, Norberto "Robow" Sanchez, Berma Esther (Sanchez) DeWulf, Guillermo Sach Sanchez, Elba Luz Sanchez, Willma "Nilsa" (Sanchez) Medina, Michael "Mitch" Sanchez and Edwin Sanchez; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Killeen, which is in charge of arrangements.
