alignleftFuneral services for Quiller J. West, 58, of Arlington, will be at noon Thursday at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Killeen, with the Rev. Hatcher officiating. Interment will be at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery.BRQuiller James West was born March 1, 1951 in Hawthorne, Louisiana. He enjoyed the love of a large, extended family and created many happy and lasting memories there before moving to Killeen, Texas with his late mother and stepfather in the mid-1960s.
alignjustifyQuiller or JamesJim as some came to know him graduated near the top of the Killeen High School Class of 1969 and was rewarded with a scholarship to play football at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN. After a year there he transferred to North Texas State University in Denton, TX, but had his studies interrupted by the military draft. Quiller took advantage of his military service, traveling to Europe before returning to the U.S. and completing his education. After serving as a middle school teacher in Denton, Quiller made the leap into the world of high technology and began an experience-rich career that led him to criss-cross the country for an ever-increasing level of responsibility.
alignjustifyCo-workers from across the country join the family in mourning James departure. His work included stints at Sprint, IBM, Northrup, and several contract engagements across the years. Every assignment ended in new friends that have remained close.
alignjustifyQuiller also enjoyed over thirty years as a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and the relationships nurtured over the years are altered forever by his death. The Ques motto Friendship Is Essential To The Soul was etched into every action, every deed done by Quiller, and he lived by the fraternitys Cardinal Principles, Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift.
Ultimately, Quillers life was defined by his commitment to family. He was a devoted son, brother, father and husband. He is preceded in death by: Grandmother - Rosetta West, Grandfather - Sweet Papa Wingate West, Mother - Rosie May Bennett, Father - Namen Lester Bennett, and Sister - Brenda Joyce West.BRMr. West died May 1, 2009, in an Arlington hospital. He was born March 1, 1951, in Hawthorne, La.
alignjustifyHe leaves to mourn: wife Mary Mathis West, daughter Shawnkia Chestnut, grandson Tyler Konkel, stepdaughters Latonya Johnson and Amanda Bernard, brothers Charles West, Glen West, and sisters Glenda Stuart, Ruby West and Theda Brothers West, and a host of loving relatives and friends. His extended family of former co-workers from Sprint and IBM has remained unwavering in their commitment to Jim and his well-being.
Quiller was especially comforted in the final years of his life by fellow members of the Chosen Vessel church and the spiritual leadership of Bishop Richard Young.
