R. Chanslor

Services for R.D. Chanslor, 91, of Killeen will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Christ in Killeen with Boyce Edwards, Dan Carter, and James Haney officiating. Burial will be in Live Oak Cemetery in Youngsport.

Mr. Chanslor died Sunday, Oct. 19, in a Killeen hospital. He was born Nov. 28, 1916, in Killeen.

He was educated in and a life-long resident of Killeen. Chanslors first job was as a page for the Texas State Senate in the summer when he was 9 years old, during the governorship of Miriam Ferguson 1922-1925. He was co- owner and operator of Chanslor Sons Hardware Store, and Chanslor and Sons Funeral Home until 1938 when his father, Earl Chanslor passed away. After serving as a SSG in the Army Air Corps from 1941-1945 R.D. returned to Killeen and became partners with his brother-in-law Sidney Young. The business became Chanslor-Young Funeral Home and Chanslor and Young Hardware. Chanslor ran the hardware store until he sold it to Johnny Young in 1954. He loved baseball and coachedsponsored the Chanslor-Young Cardinals little league baseball team throughout the 1950s. In 1959 his team made it the state championship in Odessa. He remained the funeral director until the funeral home was sold to Harper-Talasek in 1964. In 1967, Chanslor became Bell County Road Commissioner for Precinct No. 4 serving 3 terms. He retired in 1978. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ in Killeen.

R.D. Chanslor was preceded in death by his parents Elbe Earl Chanslor, Elba Dora Tankersley Chanslor; brother William Alfred Chanslor; sister, Earl Lena Chanslor Young; nephews, Dr. Thomas Wilson Young and Bill Chanslor Jr.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Dora Ray Davis Chanslor; two daughters, Donna Chanslor Nicodemus of Houston and Creta Chanslor Bales of Killeen; grandsons; Joe Bob and Chance Bales; two great-granddaughters; Emma and Jenna Bales of Killeen.

Memorials may be made to Peaceable Kingdom, 19051 FM 2484, Killeen.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Killeen.
