Radames "Sweetie" Melendez-Cruz was born July 30, 1942 in Ceiba, P.R. He was one of nine children. As a kid, Radames played baseball, acted in plays with his brother, and enjoyed reciting poems.
When he was 17, Radames signed up and served under the National Guard for eight years before going active duty in 1969. He served as an Infantryman under Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry during Vietnam, where he earned several awards. Radames was a recipient of a Purple Heart with one bronze oak leaf cluster.
Radames married the woman of his dreams, Maria Judith in 1979. Together they shared four children Abel, Dan, Cynthia, and Japhet, and nine grandchildren. They raised their children in Allentown, PA where Radames was an Evangelist. He preached in churches throughout Puerto Rico and across the United States. Radames and Maria were married 39 years until his death.
Radames' hobbies consisted of gardening, painting, fishing, and drawing. He enjoyed going to the beach and the zoo. Radames was a great husband, father, and grandfather. He had a kind heart, patient, and loving. Radames had a great sense of humor and was liked by everyone everywhere he went. We love you, miss you, and will remember you forever.
