Richard Allen
Schrodt
February 11, 1950 — October 7, 2026
Killeen
Richard Allen Schrodt, of Killeen, Texas, age 76, accompanied Jesus to Heaven on October 7, 2026. Born February 11, 1950, Richard was the second son of Leo and Helen Schrodt of Creston, Iowa. At 2 weeks of age, he required a major operation in order to survive. Relatives wondered if he would survive babyhood, but Richard beat medical records as he survived many crises, including a 2013 single-lung transplant and double amputation of his legs. Richard passed away at home due to vascular stoppages in the brain.
Richard joined the Navy right out of high school. In the bottom of a ship for most of his four years, he did go inland in Vietnam, wherein he stood guard in Agent Orange sprayed ground. Upon his return home, he attended Creston College to become a carpenter, but found the cold winters so bitter that he rejoined the military. This time, Richard was in the Army, which he loved because he helped soldiers to practice war strategies in the warm Mojave Desert. He credits the Army with helping him get sober. He passed away with 42 years of sobriety.
Returning to Creston and carpentry, cold winters again gave him cause to explore careers. He joined Vision Quest, wherein judges would offer criminals to join a wagon train for one year rather than go to juvenile jail for one year. Richard became the Scout for the mule-drawn wagon drain, traveling up and down the East Coast. Upon his return to Iowa, he immediately went to an AA dance in Des Moines, wherein he met his wife of 33 years, Bobbi. She at first wondered if he was “touched” when he said he’d just crawled off a wagon train.
Richard loved Jesus and hoped to influence as many people as possible to also love Jesus, so they would also gain entry to Heaven.
Richard loved being a dad and grandpa. He is survived by his son, Shad Waggoner (Shandra), of Boulder, Colorado; his daughter, Shaylene Waggoner, of Phoenix, Arizona; his son, Peter Nguoth, of Chandler, Arizona; his beloved grandchildren, Sheridan Collins, Kennedy Waggoner, Brody Collins, Kole Waggoner, Olivia Causey, and Night Waggoner; great-granddaughters, Brinley, Aspen, Nevaeh, and Indie; and a great-grandson that will arrive in December! His late brother Donald’s son, is nephew, Scott Harlan of Iowa.
A funeral will take place First Baptist Church of Trimmier, 6405 Chaparral Road, Killeen, Texas, on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, with a “Meet and Greet” beginning at 10:00AM and a service following at 11:00AM. After his funeral, he will be flown to Iowa, wherein later services will be held at the Chapel in Graceland Cemetery, Creston, Iowa.
Services are under the direction of Harper Talasek Funeral Home.
