Graveside services with full military honors for retired Sgt. 1st Class Robert H. Whitney, 77, of Killeen, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Central Texas Veterans Cemetery with an Army chaplain officiating. Mr. Whitney died April 23, 2011, in a Temple hospital. He was born April 17, 1934, in Hartford, Conn.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1952, and served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. His awards include: National Defense Service Medal with bronze star, Good Conduct Medal with five bronze loops, Korean Service Medal with three bronze service stars, Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze service stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with palm Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Sharpshooter Badge.
He retired in 1978 at Fort Hood before going to work for the Texas Department of Corrections as a guard, retiring from there after 10 years.
Mr. Whitney was preceded in death by his wife, Aurelia, and his parents.
Survivors include his sons, Harry Whitney of Salado, Robert E. Whitney of Temple and Michael Whitney of Texas daughters, Linda J. Whitney of Austin, Jennise WhitneyLeafa and her husband, Sio, of Harker Heights and six grandchildren.
HarperTalasek Funeral Home in Killeen is in charge of arrangements.
