Funeral services for Sgt. Mark A. Simpson, 40, of Fort Hood, will be at noon Friday at HarperTalasek Funeral Home Chapel in Killeen with Chaplain Thomas Holmes officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery.
Mr. Simpson died Sept. 26, 2010, in Kandahar, Afghanistan. He was born Feb. 3, 1970, in Peoria, Ill.
Mr. Simpson was born and raised in Peoria, Ill. He was an avid computer gamer and graduated from Richwood High School. After working as a security guard, truck driver and in food management, Mr. Simpson joined the U.S. Army in 2005, and served tours at Fort Drum and Fort Hood before deploying to the Afghanistan war. His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with bronze service star, Iraq Campaign Medal with bronze service star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Action Badge, Driver and Mechanic Badge, Expert Rifle Badge.
Survivors include his wife, Aletha A. Simpson of Fort Hood daughters, Shantallia K. Simpson, Krystin M. Simpson and Jamie S. Simpson, all of Fort Hood parents, George and Carol Simpson of Peoria, Ill. brother, George F. Simpson of Missoula, Mont. sisters, Beth A. Camp of Bartlett, Carol K. Goewey of Springbay, Ill., and Amy K. Lee of East Peoria, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his son, Mark A. Simpson Jr.
Memorials in Mr. Simpsons name may be made to a charity of your choice.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at HarperTalasek Funeral Home in Killeen, which is in charge of arrangements.
