Funeral services for Sonya Pointer, 36, of Killeen, will be at noon Tuesday at Marlboro Heights Missionary Baptist Church in Killeen with Dr. Shaun L. Moton officiating. Burial will take place at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery.
She was born to the parental stewardship of Johnny Lee and Sandra Bolden in Meridian, Mississippi. Fearfully and wonderfully made, she was born the third of ten children. The fragrance of her personality and character exemplified the true essence of the number three, which signifies authoritative approval based on a complete perspective.
She was educated in the public schools of Meridian, Mississippi graduating from Meridian High School in 1992. As young woman with strong convictions for responsible living she enlisted in the United States Army shortly after graduating from High School. During her military tenure she served in several positions to include: A Computer Applications Trainer, A Distribution Specialist and A Movement Control Specialist, serving one tour of duty in Germany. As a woman of remarkable ambitions Sonya both sought and seized every opportunity to better equip herself to fulfill her duties to the military. The following are a few of her many ambitious accomplishments while serving in the military: She attended and graduated from the Basic Job Training Course, Transportation School, Army Movement Management System Revised Course and, the Standard Army Training Course. After investing five honorable years of service to her country, she was honorably discharged in 1997. Among the fruit of all that she stood to gain throughout her military career, none would compare to the love ushered into her life when she met and married Michael Pointer on August 30, 1994. Together, they would embrace the joy of discharging parental stewardship to four children.
Even after leaving the Military Sonyas ambitious pursuit of expanding her knowledge and extending experience would manifest by her willingness to submit to the discipline of higher education. She received an Associates of Applied Science Degree from Central Texas College in 1999 and a Bachelors of Science Degree from Tarleton State University in 2004.
With a heart to release the fruit of her labor through selfless and sacrificial service to others, Sonya assumed her position on the field of education as a 3rd grade teacher at Montague Village Elementary School where she served until her health declined. Her passion for sharpening the focus of her students for no less than success was unwavering and undeniable. Her genuine interest and concern for her students was kindred to her own. Most notable among her intentions to inspire and impact the lives of her students was the success of her efforts to create a desert room consisting of a live snake and a tarantula. She was also instrumental in the establishment and development of an after school tutoring program. She was not only a student teacher she was a Teacher Leader serving as a Technology Trainer for Montague Village.
Reaching beyond the confines of the classroom into the community she coordinated events such as, the Jump Rope for Hearts, and organized a team of teachers to participate in the Annual Fort Hood Race in Commemoration of September 11th. Among her most notable achievements at Montague Village was her contribution to the educational program when her efforts to write and submit the largest grant ever submitted from the school was rewarded with the success of being approved as applied.
Faith in God served to be the pillar upon which Sonya lived her life. Upon her acceptance of Jesus as her personal Savior she wasted no time serving His purpose as Lord of her life. Upon uniting with the Marlboro Church Family in August of 1996 her efforts to maximize the Love of her Lord could be readily noted through her selfless and sacrificial service to the Nursery and Artistic Ministry. As she was at home, even so she was in the public presentation of herself before others. In the nursery no child could miss the mother in her at school no student or teacher could miss the mentor in her and at church, none could miss the minister displayed behind the ministry she performed. Through the silhouette of her life ring the resounding words of the apostle Paul admonishing each of us: Be ye stedfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
Having fought a good fight, finished her course, and kept the faith Sonya answered the gentle call of her Lord to enter into His eternal Presence on January 4, 2011.
