Copperas Cove

Wesley Alan Smitherman, born on December 1, 1946, in Toledo, Ohio, passed away on February 10, 2025, in Copperas Cove, Texas. He leaves behind a rich legacy of achievement, humor, and dedication that will forever resonate in the hearts of those whom had the privilege of knowing him.

Wesley's journey through life was marked by a multifaceted career. He served as an Operations Manager for Transportation Enterprise for 23 years before embarking on another rewarding chapter as a teacher. For 24 years, he graced the halls of Ellison High School within the Killeen Independent School District, where his enthusiasm for mathematics inspired countless students. Following this, he lent his expertise as a professor at Central Texas College, offering guidance in all areas of math from pre-algebra to trigonometry. Wesley was known for his warm, happy demeanor and infectious sense of humor, traits that made him not only a respected educator but also a cherished mentor.

An enthusiast for continual learning, Wesley earned a bachelor's degree from North Texas State University, followed by two master's degrees, one from the University of Texas School of Law and another from Southwest Texas State University. His dedication to education and self-improvement was evident in every aspect of his life.

In August 2015, Wesley's life took another beautiful turn when he met his beloved wife, Joy Kareen Anderson, on Christian Mingle, a testament to the power of love and faith in bringing two people together. Together, they shared countless memories filled with love, laughter, and support.

Wesley was not just defined by his career and education; he had a vibrant personality and a plethora of hobbies that displayed his zest for life. An avid Dallas Cowboys fan, he enjoyed the thrill of the game. He held the role of President of the Automobile License Plate Collectors Association (ALPCA). His remarkable collection showcased license plates from every state and included some exquisite antiques, even a plate from a horseless carriage. Wesley’s love for history and collecting also extended to coins, participating in chess tournaments, and capturing God's beautiful creation and special moments through photography. Wesley was also very proud to be a part of the Can Construction exhibit, a contest set up to display exhibits made of canned goods that then go to the needy. Perhaps his proudest creation was his Train Room, a stunning display he lovingly called "Joyville," where he built an intricate world for his cherished trains.

Wesley was a member of the American Philatelic Society for an impressive 25 years, proving his lifelong passion for learning and collecting.

Wesley is survived by his loving wife, Joy; sister, Nancy Alred and husband, Robert; and nephews, Brett and wife, Brittany and Ryan; and great nephew, Barrett.
