William Baril

December 12, 1943 — June 29, 2022

Copperas Cove

On Wednesday evening, June 29, 2022, William (Bill) Baril passed away peacefully surrounded by family at his home in Copperas Cove, Texas. Bill was born in 1943 to Orville and Dorothy Baril of Green Bay, Wisconsin. He married Margaret (Peggy) Miller, his high school sweetheart, in 1964. From 1963 to 1983, Bill served in the Army and retired from active duty as a Master Sergeant. Throughout his service, Bill was stationed in several places across the U.S. and in Germany. His wife, Peggy; son, Jeffrey Baril; and daughter, Theresa O’Connor, supported his military career and accompanied him on the adventure that comes with moving every few years. He was fearless, believed that life should be lived by a code of honor, and understood the value of a promise.

After retirement, Bill worked with the Reserve Components on Fort Hood for more than 20 years, helping to train the next generation of leaders. As an avid outdoorsman, Bill enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also majored in Art History at Central Texas College and enjoyed painting, whether on canvas, the noses of aircraft, or the helmets of pilots. He was a voracious reader and never passed up a good crossword puzzle. He was a comedian at heart and took every opportunity to tell a joke, good, bad, or groan-worthy, to family, friends, and strangers alike. He loved to make people laugh.

Bill was the second of eight children. He is survived by siblings, John Baril; Elaine Hill; and Barbara Hanke. He is also survived by his wife, Peggy; son, Jeffrey (Jamie) Baril; daughter, Theresa (Sean) O’Connor; and grandchildren, Jacklyn O’Connor, Miranda (Hiram) Rangel, Danielle O’Connor, and Matthew Baril. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Dorothy Baril, sisters, Judy Pennenberg and Bonnie Van Rossum, and brothers, Joseph Baril and Terry Baril.
